Access control systems in buildings and secure areas often employ RFID cards or fobs. Other uses include toll collection, animal identification, and passport security.

The effectiveness of RFID depends on factors such as the tag type, the reader's power, environmental interference, and the nature of the objects being tagged. While offering significant advantages in automation and data management, considerations regarding data security and privacy are also important when implementing RFID systems.
