R41

R41 is a designation that can refer to several different things, most notably a specific type of refrigerant or a designation within the New York City Subway system.

In the context of refrigerants, R41 is an HFC (hydrofluorocarbon) blend. It is composed of R125 and R143a. R41 has been used as a refrigerant in some air conditioning and refrigeration systems. However, like many HFCs, it has a high global warming potential (GWP) and is being phased out in many regions due to environmental regulations aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Its use has largely been replaced by refrigerants with lower GWPs.

Within the New York City Subway, R41 is a service designation. It refers to a specific type of rolling stock used on the subway lines. The R41 cars were built by the Budd Company and operated by the New York City Transit Authority. These cars were primarily used on the A, C, and E lines in Brooklyn and Manhattan. They were known for their distinctive design, including their stainless steel construction and relatively spacious interiors. The R41 fleet was gradually retired and replaced by newer rolling stock, with the last of these cars being removed from service in the early 2000s.
