In Japan, the term is most commonly seen as R-18, an official rating assigned by the Film Classification and Rating Organization (Eirin) to works with explicit sexual content or other material deemed unsuitable for minors. R-18 materials are generally restricted from sale or distribution to anyone under 18, and retailers may require age verification at the point of purchase. The rating can apply to films, videos, and some interactive media.

In Australia, the similar concept appears as R 18+ in the country's classification system. This rating is used for mature content in films and video games, with access limited to individuals who are at least 18 years old. The framework is enforced through legal sale and distribution restrictions, and some content can fall into other categories or be refused classification if deemed unsuitable for public release.

Outside these systems, R18 is sometimes used informally on digital platforms to mark adult-only content, including websites, games, and publications.
