It has no single founder; rather, it emerged from a convergence of architectural and interior practices in Europe and North America that favored heavy, durable materials and straightforward geometry.

Key characteristics include: use of raw or minimally finished materials such as limestone, granite, concrete, and steel; a coarse or textured surface language; blocky, modular massing; a limited, earthy palette; and exposed construction methods that reveal the making of the object, such as formwork textures, saw marks, or rock-faced finishes.
