Pytheas
Pytheas of Massalia (c. 4th century BCE) was a Greek geographer and explorer from Massalia, modern Marseille. He is best known for a long voyage from the Mediterranean to the northwestern fringes of Europe, described in his now-lost work On the Ocean (often referred to as a periplus). He is considered one of the earliest travelers to attempt systematic exploration of the far north and to report on lands beyond the reach of most Greek geographers.
