Pyretos

Pyretos is a genus of small, often brightly colored lizards native to the Caribbean region, particularly the island of Hispaniola. The genus includes two recognized species: Pyretosoma pyretos and Pyretosoma pyretosoma. These lizards are known for their distinctive appearance, with a combination of dark and light coloration that resembles a fire or flame, hence the name "pyretos," which is derived from the Greek word for fire.

Pyretos lizards are diurnal and terrestrial, spending most of their time on the ground. They are omnivorous, feeding on a variety of insects, small vertebrates, and plant material. Their diet is opportunistic, and they will consume whatever is available.

Pyretos lizards are relatively small, with adults typically reaching lengths of 10-15 centimeters. They have a slender body, a long tail, and a pair of small, retractable claws on their hind feet. Their most distinctive feature is their coloration, which varies among individuals but generally includes a combination of dark and light shades, often with a yellow or orange tint.

These lizards are found in a variety of habitats, including forests, scrublands, and agricultural areas. They are often encountered in the understory of forests, where they can be seen basking in the sun or foraging for food.

Pyretos lizards are not considered to be endangered, but their populations can be affected by habitat loss and degradation. Conservation efforts are focused on protecting their habitats and reducing human-wildlife conflict.
