Pyrausta

Pyrausta is a genus of moths in the family Crambidae, commonly known as pyraustine moths. It is placed in the subfamily Pyraustinae and includes numerous described species with a global distribution.

Description and ecology: These moths are small, with forewings often narrow and patterned and a wingspan typically between 8 and 25 millimeters. Adult Pyrausta moths are mostly active at night or twilight and are attracted to light. The life cycle follows the typical Lepidoptera stages—egg, larva (caterpillar), pupa, and adult. Larvae are herbivorous and feed on a variety of herbaceous plants, including ornamentals in gardens and crops in some settings. Many species have larvae that feed on leaves or create shelter by rolling or tying leaves.

Distribution and habitat: Pyrausta species occur worldwide, with the highest diversity in temperate and tropical regions. They occupy habitats ranging from meadows and grasslands to gardens and cultivated lands.
