They are typically made from a harder wax formulation, such as paraffin, beeswax, or soy wax, which allows them to maintain their shape even when burned. The term "pylväs" refers to a pillar or column, aptly describing the candle's upright form.

Their simple, freestanding design allows them to be placed on various surfaces like candle holders, plates, or directly on stable, heat-resistant surfaces.
