While it is not a formal discipline, it is widely used to contrast proactive delivery with pull-based methods.

In information technology and software architecture, push-oriented design pushes data from servers to clients. Examples include push notifications, server-sent events, WebSocket channels, and publish/subscribe messaging. Benefits include lower latency for updates and reduced need for client polling, but challenges include scaling, network bandwidth, notification fatigue, and privacy considerations.

In marketing and distribution, a push-oriented or push strategy focuses on moving products through distribution channels by promoting them to retailers and distributors. Tactics include trade promotions, point-of-sale incentives, and salesforce-driven promotions. This contrasts with pull-oriented strategies that stimulate consumer demand to pull products through the channel. The push approach can accelerate shelf presence but may incur higher channel costs or misalignment with end-user demand.
