Pumpströme

Pumpströme is a term used in electrical engineering to describe transient currents that can occur in inductive circuits. These currents are generated when a switch in a circuit containing inductance is opened or closed, particularly when the current is interrupted rapidly. The rapid change in current through an inductor induces a voltage that can be significantly higher than the source voltage. This induced voltage attempts to maintain the original current flow, leading to a phenomenon often referred to as a "kickback" or "inductive kick."

The magnitude and duration of pumpströme depend on several factors, including the inductance of the circuit, the resistance, and the speed at which the switch operates. In circuits with high inductance and low resistance, these transient currents can become quite substantial and can pose a risk of damaging sensitive electronic components or causing arcing at switch contacts.

To mitigate the effects of pumpströme, various protective measures are employed. These include using snubber circuits, which are typically composed of a resistor and capacitor in series, placed in parallel with the switching element. Diodes, such as flyback diodes, are also commonly used to provide a path for the inductive current to dissipate safely when the switch opens.
