Puheavusteet

Puheavusteet, also known as speech aids or assistive listening devices for speech, are technologies and techniques designed to improve communication for individuals who have difficulty speaking, understanding speech, or both. These aids can range from simple communication boards to sophisticated electronic devices.

One category of puheavusteet includes augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) devices. These are used by people with speech impairments, such as those resulting from stroke, ALS, cerebral palsy, or autism. AAC devices can be low-tech, like picture symbols or alphabet boards, or high-tech, such as speech-generating devices (SGDs) that produce synthesized speech when a user selects words or symbols. Some SGDs are operated by eye gaze, touch screens, or head switches.
