Publishers are organizations that bring written works to the public by selecting, developing, producing, and distributing content. They acquire manuscripts, manage authors’ contracts, and assume financial risk for the publication process. Publishers may hold rights for various markets, formats, and languages, and they oversee editing, design, production, sales, and distribution. They may publish in print, digital, or audio formats and work with retailers, libraries, and distributors to reach audiences.

There are several sectors within publishing. Trade publishers produce books for general readers, including fiction and mainstream nonfiction. Academic and scholarly publishers publish journals, monographs, and reference works for researchers and students. Professional and technical publishers target practitioners in fields such as medicine, law, or engineering. Children’s and religious publishers serve specific age groups and communities. In addition, self-publishing platforms enable authors to publish with varying degrees of gatekeeping, and hybrid publishers offer combined services with traditional-like terms.

The publishing workflow typically includes acquisition of manuscripts, development and copyediting, design and production, metadata creation, and formatting for print or digital formats. Production teams handle typography, cover art, and rights management, while distribution channels arrange printing, e-commerce, and library or retailer access. Marketing, publicity, and sales efforts aim to reach target audiences, and ongoing rights management handles licensing, translations, and adaptations.

Business models vary. Traditional publishing provides advances and royalties based on sales, with publishers bearing upfront costs and financial risk. Self-publishing offers direct author royalties, more control, and faster time to market. Hybrid models blend elements of both. The industry increasingly includes open access in academic publishing, digital-first releases, and data-driven marketing, reflecting broader shifts in technology and reader behavior.
