Pseudoterminaali

Pseudoterminaali is a term used in computing to describe a software component that emulates the behavior of a physical terminal. It allows a program to interact with an operating system's shell or command-line interface as if it were a user typing commands into a traditional terminal window. This emulation is crucial for applications that need to execute shell commands, capture their output, or provide interactive command-line experiences within a graphical user interface.

Unlike a true terminal, which is a hardware device, a pseudoterminal exists as a pair of virtual devices. One end of this pair, known as the master, is controlled by the application that needs to interact with the shell. The other end, the slave, is presented to the operating system as a real terminal device. Data written to the master is passed to the slave, and data written to the slave by the shell or other processes is passed back to the master and then to the controlling application.

Pseudoterminals are fundamental to many modern computing tasks. They are used in terminal emulators like xterm, GNOME Terminal, and iTerm2, enabling users to run shells within graphical environments. They are also essential for tools like SSH clients, which establish remote shell sessions, and for development environments that need to execute build scripts or run command-line programs.
