Pseudoprogressive refers to a phenomenon in political discourse where individuals or groups adopt progressive rhetoric and policies superficially while maintaining or promoting underlying conservative, reactionary, or exclusionary values. The term is often used to describe those who selectively embrace progressive ideals—such as social justice, inclusivity, or equality—while ignoring or opposing foundational progressive principles like economic fairness, systemic change, or anti-oppressive structures.

Pseudoprogressives may advocate for symbolic gestures, such as diversity initiatives or identity-based representation, without addressing material inequalities or institutional barriers. Their approach can appear performative, prioritizing public perception over meaningful reform. Critics argue that this strategy undermines genuine progressive movements by diluting their impact or co-opting their language for partisan or ideological gain.

The concept gained prominence in debates over social justice, particularly in discussions about race, gender, and economic policy. Some accuse pseudoprogressives of using progressive language to deflect criticism or justify policies that disproportionately benefit privileged groups.
