Pseudoherms

Pseudoherms is a term sometimes used to describe individuals whose biological sex characteristics do not fit typical definitions of male or female. This can encompass a range of conditions, often referred to as Differences of Sex Development (DSD). DSDs are congenital conditions that result in atypical development of chromosomal, gonadal, or anatomical sex. These variations can manifest in various ways, including differences in chromosomes, hormones, gonads (testes or ovaries), or external genitalia.

It is important to note that "pseudoherm" is an outdated and potentially stigmatizing term. Modern medical and advocacy communities prefer to use more respectful and accurate language, such as "intersex" or "Differences of Sex Development." Intersex is an umbrella term used for variations in sex characteristics that do not fit typical binary notions of male or female bodies. These variations are natural and occur in about 1.7% of the population.

Individuals with DSDs can have a wide spectrum of experiences and identities. Their chromosomal makeup might be XX, XY, or something else entirely. Their gonads may be testes, ovaries, or a combination. Their internal and external anatomy can also vary. Medical approaches to DSDs have evolved, with a greater emphasis on supporting individuals and their families, respecting their bodily autonomy, and avoiding unnecessary medical interventions that do not align with the individual's long-term well-being and identity. The understanding and discussion of these variations continue to develop within medical, social, and personal spheres.
