Prædiktiv

Prædiktiv is an adjective used in Danish (and to some extent Norwegian) to denote something that relates to prediction or forecasting. It corresponds to the English term predictive and is commonly used in scientific, technical, and business contexts. The Danish spelling uses æ, with prædiktiv being the conventional form; Norwegian often uses the form prediktiv. The term inherits its meaning from the Latin praedictio, “a foretelling,” via English predict/predictive.

In practice, prædiktiv describes methods, models, or analyses designed to forecast future events based on historical data. This includes predictive analytics, predictive modeling, and predictive maintenance. Applications span finance (credit risk forecasts), healthcare (disease risk prediction), manufacturing (preemptive maintenance), and marketing (customer churn prediction). A prædiktiv approach emphasizes the use of data-driven evidence to anticipate outcomes rather than explain past performance.

The concept is distinct from prognostisk in some Scandinavian languages; prognostisk often emphasizes prognosis based on current signs. In English-language discourse, predictive methods can be evaluated by accuracy, calibration, and usefulness for decision-making.
