Prämolar

Prämolar refers to a type of tooth located in the mouth of mammals, situated between the canine teeth and the molars. Humans typically have two premolars on each side of the upper jaw and two on each side of the lower jaw, totaling eight premolars in an adult dentition. These teeth are also known as bicuspids because they generally possess two cusps, which are the pointed or rounded projections on the chewing surface of the tooth.

The primary function of premolars is to assist in the process of mastication, or chewing. They play a transitional role, with the first premolars often resembling canines in their pointed shape, while the second premolars are more similar to molars with their broader, flatter surfaces. This morphology allows them to effectively tear and grind food. In the dental development of humans, premolars erupt after the deciduous (baby) teeth have fallen out, typically between the ages of 10 and 12. They are permanent teeth and are not replaced by another set. The anatomy of premolars includes a crown, the visible part above the gum line, and one or two roots anchoring the tooth to the jawbone. Their position in the dental arch makes them crucial for the overall structure and function of the mouth.
