Origin and usage: The term is used in contemporary design literature and pedagogy to describe a practice that extends traditional prototyping beyond a single medium. It is not a standardized discipline, and definitions vary between authors and fields.

Key principles: Rapid and iterative development; integration across physical, digital, and experiential domains; user- and context-centered evaluation; documentation and learning across prototypes; reuse and lineage of components across iterations.

Methods: Hybrid prototyping (combining hardware, software, and service scripts); digital twins or simulations to mirror real-world dynamics; scenario-based testing; prototype mapping to align stakeholder needs; scaffolded prototyping to build complexity gradually.

Applications: Product design, interactive installations, urban or service design, and education and research where understanding interactions across multiple layers is important.
