Proteinlekkasje, also known as proteinuria, is the presence of protein in the urine. This condition can occur in both healthy and diseased kidneys. In healthy kidneys, a small amount of protein is normally excreted in the urine, typically less than 150 milligrams per day. Proteinuria is defined as the excretion of more than 150 milligrams of protein per day.

Proteinuria can be classified into different types based on the size of the protein molecules and the underlying cause. Albuminuria is the presence of albumin, a small protein, in the urine, while proteinuria refers to the presence of larger proteins. The causes of proteinuria can vary widely, including kidney diseases, systemic diseases, and certain medications.

Proteinuria can be detected through urine tests, which measure the amount of protein present. The results are often expressed as a ratio of protein to creatinine, a waste product produced by the muscles. A high protein-to-creatinine ratio indicates proteinuria.

Proteinuria can be a sign of various kidney conditions, such as glomerulonephritis, diabetic nephropathy, and lupus nephritis. It can also be associated with systemic diseases like systemic lupus erythematosus, rheumatoid arthritis, and multiple myeloma. In some cases, proteinuria may be caused by medications, such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) or certain antibiotics.

The management of proteinuria depends on the underlying cause. In some cases, lifestyle modifications, such as controlling blood pressure and blood sugar levels, may be sufficient. In other cases, more aggressive treatment, such as immunosuppressive drugs or dialysis, may be necessary. Early detection and treatment of proteinuria can help prevent the progression of kidney disease and improve overall health outcomes.
