Proprietäre, the German adjective corresponding to the English term proprietary, describes property, content, or technology that is owned and controlled by a private entity. The owner holds exclusive rights over its use, modification, and redistribution, typically enforced through licenses, contracts, and intellectual property protections. The term is widely used in business, technology, and legal contexts to distinguish privately controlled assets from publicly owned or freely available ones.

The concept covers software, hardware, data formats, standards, and other assets where access or behavior is restricted by the owner. In software, proprietary products are distributed under licenses that limit copying, reverse engineering, or altering the code.
