Propertiesadhesion refers to the collection of characteristics that determine how well two materials bond at their interface. It encompasses the strength and permanence of the bond, the conditions required to establish adhesion, and the durability of the bond under service. Adhesion arises from interfacial interactions between the adhesive and substrate, including chemical bonding, physical interlocking due to surface roughness, and wetting of the surface by the adhesive.

Key metrics describe different aspects of adhesion. Adhesion strength, often measured as peel strength, tack, or lap shear strength, provides a quantitative bond value. The work of adhesion or interfacial energy characterizes the energy required to separate the bonded surfaces, while wetting is described by contact angle. Standard testing methods include peel tests, shear tests, and cross-cut or pull-off tests conducted under specified environmental and temperature conditions.

Several factors influence adhesion properties. Substrate surface energy and cleanliness, surface roughness, and chemical compatibility with the adhesive are crucial. Environmental conditions such as humidity and temperature, as well as the curing or setting regime of the adhesive, also affect bonding performance. The adhesive formulation—polarity, functional groups, viscosity, and cure chemistry—plays a decisive role. Adhesion mechanisms can be physical (mechanical interlocking, van der Waals forces) or chemical (covalent or ionic bonds), or a combination of both. It is important to distinguish adhesion (bond at the interface) from cohesion (internal strength of the adhesive).

Applications of adhesion properties span coatings, sealants, assembly adhesives, electronics, automotive, aerospace, and biomedical devices. Evaluations consider performance under environmental exposure, aging, and mechanical loading to estimate service life.
