Prolaktiinitasojen

Prolaktiinitasojen refers to the measurement of prolactin levels in the blood. Prolactin is a hormone primarily produced by the pituitary gland in the brain. Its main function is to stimulate milk production in women after childbirth, a process known as lactation. Prolactin also plays a role in fertility, immune function, and other bodily processes in both men and women.

Elevated prolactin levels, known as hyperprolactinemia, can occur for various reasons. These can include physiological causes such as pregnancy, breastfeeding, stress, and sleep. Pathological causes are also common and can include pituitary tumors (prolactinomas), hypothyroidism, certain medications (like some antidepressants and antipsychotics), and kidney or liver disease. In men, high prolactin levels can lead to decreased libido, erectile dysfunction, and infertility. In women, it can cause irregular or absent menstrual periods, milky nipple discharge (galactorrhea) unrelated to pregnancy, and infertility.

Diagnosing hyperprolactinemia typically involves a blood test to measure prolactin levels. If elevated levels are detected, further tests may be conducted to identify the underlying cause. Treatment depends on the cause and may involve addressing the underlying condition, adjusting medications, or, in the case of prolactinomas, using medication to shrink the tumor or, rarely, surgery. Monitoring prolactin levels is often part of the management process.
