It involves coordinating people, processes, and technology to deliver a defined product, service, or result. Projects are temporary sets of activities with a specific start and end, unlike ongoing operations. The Danish term projektstyring is commonly used in Scandinavia and mirrors the universal project management framework: initiating, planning, executing, monitoring and controlling, and closing. Success depends on clear objectives, stakeholder alignment, and a feasible plan.

Key activities include defining the project charter, creating a work breakdown structure, developing schedules, estimating costs, and identifying risks. Planning also covers governance structures, communication plans, and quality criteria. During execution, resources are mobilized, tasks are performed, and progress is tracked against the plan. Monitoring and controlling involve tracking performance, managing changes, and mitigating risks. Closing ensures deliverables are accepted, lessons learned captured, and the project formally closed.

Methodologies vary; traditional approaches like PMBOK and PRINCE2 emphasize formal governance, while agile methods such as Scrum and Kanban focus on iterative delivery and flexibility. Organizations tailor approaches to context, regulatory requirements, and risk tolerance. Common tools include work breakdown structures, Gantt charts, critical path analysis, risk registers, and stakeholder matrices. Key metrics include schedule and cost variance, earned value, and scope stability. The aim is to balance time, cost, scope, and quality while satisfying stakeholders and achieving measurable benefits.
