Participants are usually assigned specific work packages, deliverables, and milestones, sharing in the risks and rewards of the project.

Roles and types: The project coordinator leads the consortium; beneficiaries carry out work packages; subcontractors may perform defined tasks under contract; associated partners provide specialized expertise or facilities without full partner status. Collaboration relies on clear governance, including decision-making procedures and mechanisms for dispute resolution.

Selection and agreements: Partners are chosen for expertise, capacity, resources, and relevance to objectives. A consortium agreement defines rights and obligations, data sharing, access to results, intellectual property arrangements, exploitation plans, and publication policies.

Funding and compliance: Partners report costs, submit deliverables, and adhere to budget controls. Public funding typically requires compliance with rules on eligible costs, audit trails, and open dissemination of results.

Intellectual property and dissemination: IP regimes distinguish foreground and background IP; licensing terms determine how results are exploited; dissemination policies promote sharing while protecting sensitive information.

Challenges and best practices: Differences in organizational culture, language, and procedures can complicate collaboration. Coordinating across borders, ensuring equitable contribution, and maintaining clear communication are essential.
