Produktionsregel, also known as a production rule or rewrite rule, is a fundamental concept in formal grammars and computer science, particularly in the context of formal languages, automata theory, and artificial intelligence. A production rule specifies how to transform one string of symbols into another. It typically takes the form of an arrow separating a left-hand side from a right-hand side. For example, A -> BC means that the symbol 'A' can be replaced by the sequence of symbols 'BC'.

In the realm of formal grammars, production rules are the building blocks used to define the syntax of a language. A grammar consists of a set of production rules, a set of terminal symbols (which are the actual characters of the language), a set of non-terminal symbols (which represent syntactic categories), and a start symbol. By repeatedly applying production rules, strings of terminal symbols can be generated, forming valid sentences or expressions in the language.

The application of production rules can be seen as a rewriting system. Starting with an initial string, a production rule can be applied if its left-hand side matches a substring within the current string. The matching substring is then replaced by the right-hand side of the rule. This process can continue until no more rules can be applied or until a desired string is reached.

Production rules are also central to artificial intelligence, especially in expert systems and planning. They can represent knowledge and reasoning processes, allowing a system to infer new information or plan sequences of actions. The structure of production rules makes them relatively easy for both humans to understand and for computers to process.
