Privatenaming

Privatenaming is a practice in which individuals or organizations use private, non-identifying, or pseudonymous names to refer to people, places, or objects in contexts where disclosure of real identifiers could pose privacy or security risks. The term is used informally in discussions of privacy-preserving data handling, research ethics, and online community management. It is not a formal standard with a single agreed-upon definition, but rather a family of techniques centered on reducing identifiability while preserving usefulness of information.

In data processing and research, privatename strategies include pseudonymization, where direct identifiers are replaced with stable aliases; tokenization, where tokens map to identifiers through a secure system; and anonymization, in which data is altered to prevent re-identification. In social contexts and online platforms, users may adopt aliases or screen names to separate private persona from public identity. In software engineering, similar concepts appear as using private or internal naming for components or data fields to avoid leaking real-world identifiers, though this use differs from privacy-focused naming.

Implementation considerations involve governance, consent, and policy alignment to ensure that aliasing serves the intended privacy goals without misleading readers or misrepresenting data provenance.
