Priorisierungsmatrix

A Prioritization Matrix, or Priorisierungsmatrix in German, is a decision-making tool used to evaluate and rank a list of options based on predefined criteria. It helps individuals and teams systematically compare alternatives to determine which ones deserve the most attention and resources.

The matrix is typically structured as a grid. The options to be evaluated, such as projects, tasks, or features, are listed along one axis. The relevant criteria for making the decision, which might include factors like cost, effort, strategic alignment, or potential impact, are listed along the other. Each option is then scored against each criterion. The scoring system can be numerical or use a weighted scale to reflect the relative importance of different criteria.

The primary advantage of using a prioritization matrix is its ability to introduce objectivity into the decision-making process. It replaces gut feelings or loudest-voice arguments with a transparent, data-driven approach. This reduces bias and helps build consensus within a team by making the rationale for prioritization clear to everyone involved.

Common applications for this tool include product management for feature backlog ranking, project portfolio management for selecting initiatives, and even in personal task management. It is closely related to other frameworks like the Eisenhower Matrix, which prioritizes based on urgency and importance, or a Weighted Scoring Model, which is a more complex form of a prioritization matrix.
