PrinceArchbishop is a historical term used to describe an archbishop who also held secular, princely authority within a territorial state of the Holy Roman Empire. A prince-archbishop governed both a church jurisdiction and a ruler’s domain, combining spiritual leadership with temporal rule. The position was part of a broader category of ecclesiastical princes in medieval and early modern Europe, where certain archbishoprics were sovereign principalities within the imperial structure. In English-language sources the title is often rendered as prince-archbishop or prince-bishop, reflecting its dual religious and political nature.

In practice, prince-archbishops sat as princes of the empire and often took part in imperial governance, including participation in the Reichstag and, in some cases, election of the emperor. Their powers spanned religious duties—overseeing the diocese, upholding church doctrine, and appointing clergy—and secular matters such as law, taxation, defense, and administration of their territories. The exact extent of authority varied by territory and period, with major examples based in central Europe.

The most famous instances were the prince-archbishops of Mainz, Cologne, and Trier, who governed archbishoprics that also functioned as sovereign principalities. Other sees, such as Salzburg and Bremen-Verden, likewise combined archiepiscopal authority with territorial lordship at different times. The arrangement helped concentrate political power in church leaders and shaped interdicts, alliances, and conflicts across the empire.

The system declined in the wake of secularization and the mediatization of the early 19th century, culminating in the dissolution of many ecclesiastical principalities in 1803 and the reorganization of German lands under Napoleon. Today, the term is mainly of historical interest, used to describe a form of medieval and early modern governance bridging church and state.
