Salzburg

Salzburg is the capital of the Austrian state of Salzburg. It lies in the northern Alps on the banks of the Salzach River, near the German border. The historic center, known as Altstadt, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site celebrated for its Baroque architecture and its compact, walkable urban layout.

The city’s skyline features Hohensalzburg Fortress, one of Europe’s largest fully preserved medieval fortresses, along with the domed Salzburg Cathedral and the graceful forms of Mirabell Palace and its gardens. Getreidegasse, a busy merchant street in the old town, is lined with arcades, wrought-iron signs, and traditional shops.

Salzburg is widely associated with music. It is the birthplace of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and the city remains a major center for classical music and performing arts. Each summer the Salzburg Festival attracts international performers with opera, concerts, and theater. The cultural presence is complemented by museums, educational institutions, and a vibrant café scene.

In addition to its cultural profile, Salzburg is a regional economic and educational hub. It hosts the University of Salzburg and several research institutes, supported by a strong tourism sector that draws visitors to its historic sites, alpine landscapes, and nearby mountain resorts.
