Primerung

Primerung is a term used in coating technology to describe the priming phase in which a primer layer is applied to a substrate before subsequent finish coats. Its main aim is to improve adhesion, seal porosity, and enhance resistance to moisture and corrosion. The practice covers surface preparation and primer application and is common across metal, wood, and plastic finishing.

Surface preparation typically includes cleaning to remove oils and contaminants, degreasing when needed, and sometimes mechanical roughening to create an adhesive profile. After preparation, a primer is applied by spray, dip, or brush and allowed to cure or dry according to the primer’s specifications. Primer selection depends on substrate, environment, and the intended topcoat; metal primers often contain corrosion inhibitors, while wood primers may seal porosity and even out grain.

In manufacturing and industrial settings, primerung is often integrated into automated coating lines to ensure consistent coating thickness and cure times. Proper primerung reduces the risk of coating defects such as peeling, blistering, or uneven appearance and can extend the life of the finish system. Limitations include potential incompatibilities with subsequent coatings, requirements for ventilation, and environmental concerns related to solvent-based primers.
