Premisesethical

Premisesethical is a neologism that denotes the practice of evaluating the ethical dimensions of the premises used in reasoning, argumentation, and decision making. It asks not only whether a premise is true or well supported, but whether it is morally permissible, justifiable, or socially responsible as a starting point for inference or action.

The term blends “premises” with “ethical” and has appeared in discussions within analytic philosophy, argumentation theory, and AI ethics. It is not yet widely standardized but is used to signal a normative audit of the underlying assumptions that authorities, institutions, or algorithms rely on.

Scope and criteria: Premisesethical examines harm, consent, privacy, bias, power imbalances, and fairness. It considers whether premises embed unjust social effects, promote discrimination, or disguise normative positions as mere facts. The evaluation can inform model design, policy proposals, journalism, and education by highlighting ethically problematic premises before conclusions or policies are drawn.
