Prekomernost

Prekomernost is a noun used in several South Slavic languages, notably Slovene. It refers to the state or quality of existing in excessive quantity or degree: an overabundance, surplus, or superfluity that exceeds what is necessary or desirable. The term is used across domains to indicate unnecessary heaviness, waste, or inefficiency caused by too much of something, whether material, informational, or conceptual. Etymology: formed from the prefix pre- meaning "over" or "excess" plus a noun-forming suffix, it conveys excess or overreach.

In practical usage, prekomernost appears in economic and environmental discussions (for example, overproduction or excessive packaging), in design and product development (feature creep or overdesign), and in communication and linguistics (redundancy and pleonasm). In information theory and data management, it describes data bloat and excessive metadata. Reducing prekomernost often involves simplification, standardization, lean methods, or pruning unnecessary elements, as well as better forecasting, inventory control, and design reviews.

The concept is closely related to terms such as excess, redundancy, overdesign, and pleonasm. While sometimes inevitable, prekomernost is generally seen as a target for minimization to improve efficiency, sustainability, and clarity.
