Prehistorical

Prehistorical is an adjective referring to the period or artifacts that precede reliable written records. In common scholarly and public usage, the term is more often replaced by prehistoric or prehistory. When used, it designates aspects of human activity or material culture before the development of writing systems or before historical accounts were transmitted, and its temporal scope can extend from early human evolution to cultures that did not adopt writing at all.

In practice, “prehistorical” relates to the study of times before documented history in a given region. The study of prehistorical periods relies on archaeology, paleoanthropology, paleography, and related disciplines. Researchers analyze material remains such as stone tools, pottery, dwellings, art, and burial practices to infer daily life, social organization, subsistence strategies, technological advances, and symbolic behavior. Dating methods, including radiocarbon analysis, dendrochronology, and stratigraphic context, help establish chronological frameworks in the absence of textual records.

Common topics associated with the prehistorical record include tool technology, subsistence transitions from hunting and gathering to agriculture, the emergence of sedentary communities, the domestication of plants and animals, early art and symbolic representation, and the beginnings of metallurgy. Limitations arise from gaps in preservation and biases in the archaeological record, meaning interpretations are often provisional and continually refined with new discoveries. In modern scholarship, the preferred terms are prehistoric or prehistory, with prehistoric used as a descriptor and prehistory as the period itself.
