Portraitoriented

Portrait-oriented, also written as portrait orientation or portraitoriented, refers to the vertical alignment of an image, page, or display in which the height is greater than the width. It is the opposite of landscape orientation, where the width exceeds the height. The term is used across photography, printing, digital displays, and user interface design to describe how content is arranged.

In photography and cinematography, portrait orientation is achieved by holding the camera upright or by rotating an image during editing. It emphasizes vertical elements such as people, tall buildings, or narrow scenes, and is commonly used for portraits, documentary shots, and architectural details.

In printing and publishing, portrait orientation is standard for most text-based documents and books. It is typical for sheets like A4 and letter-sized paper, with typography and margins arranged to fit a tall page.

In digital displays and devices, portrait mode can be used by rotating screens, cameras, smartphones, and tablets. Many mobile apps adapt their layout to portrait orientation, stacking content vertically to fit narrower widths. Some devices support automatic rotation based on sensor data.

Aspect ratio and composition are related concepts; common portrait aspect ratios include 3:4, 2:3, and 4:5, though many portraits use custom sizes. Metadata such as EXIF orientation records whether an image should be displayed upright. Portrait orientation is one of two primary orientations used to structure visual information; landscape orientation is its wide counterpart.
