Porthmeor

Porthmeor is a small cove located on the north coast of Cornwall, England, near the town of St Ives. It is a popular destination for surfers, swimmers, and beachgoers, known for its beautiful sandy beach and clear waters. The beach is approximately 300 metres long and is backed by rocky headlands.

The cove is situated at the western end of St Ives, facing the Atlantic Ocean. This exposure to the open sea results in consistent swells, making Porthmeor a prime spot for surfing, particularly for experienced surfers. Despite its popularity, the beach retains a wild and rugged charm.

Above the beach, on the western headland, stands the iconic Tate St Ives, a branch of the Tate gallery that showcases modern and contemporary art, much of it inspired by the unique light and landscape of the area. The presence of the gallery adds a cultural dimension to the natural beauty of Porthmeor.

The South West Coast Path runs along the cliffs surrounding Porthmeor, offering stunning views of the coastline and the rugged Atlantic. Access to the beach is via a slipway. Facilities such as a cafe and surf hire are typically available nearby, especially during the summer months. Porthmeor is also known for its significant archaeological site, Porthmeor pottery, discovered in the area, which provides insights into Iron Age settlements. The cove is a treasured part of the St Ives landscape, combining natural beauty with artistic and historical significance.
