Pongoidea is a subfamily of the family Hominidae, which includes great apes. It is one of two subfamilies within the family, the other being the Homininae, which includes the gorillas, chimpanzees, bonobos, and humans. The Pongoidea subfamily consists of two extant species: the Bornean orangutan (Pongo pygmaeus) and the Sumatran orangutan (Pongo abelii). These great apes are native to the rainforests of Borneo and Sumatra, respectively.
