Polüüpe are abnormal growths that can form on mucous membranes. They are typically benign, meaning they are not cancerous, but some types of polyps have the potential to become cancerous over time. Polyps can occur in various parts of the body, including the nose, stomach, intestines, and uterus.

Nasal polyps, for example, are soft, painless growths that develop in the nasal passages or sinuses. They can cause symptoms such as nasal congestion, a runny nose, and a reduced sense of smell. Stomach polyps are less common and often asymptomatic, though in some cases they may cause pain or bleeding.

Colorectal polyps are a significant concern because they are a common precursor to colorectal cancer. These polyps, which grow in the colon or rectum, can vary in size and appearance. Regular screening for colorectal polyps is recommended, especially for individuals over the age of 45 or those with a family history of polyps or colorectal cancer.

Uterine polyps, also known as endometrial polyps, grow in the lining of the uterus. They can cause irregular menstrual bleeding, heavy periods, or spotting between periods.

The exact cause of polyp formation is not always clear, but factors such as inflammation, genetic predisposition, and certain medical conditions are thought to play a role. Diagnosis often involves visual inspection through endoscopy or imaging techniques. Treatment depends on the type, size, and location of the polyp, and may include removal through surgical or endoscopic procedures. In cases where polyps have the potential to become cancerous, regular monitoring after removal is often advised.
