Polümetüülakrülaat

Polümetüülakrülaat, often abbreviated as PMMA, is a transparent thermoplastic commonly known as acrylic glass or plexiglass. It is a synthetic polymer derived from the monomer methyl methacrylate. PMMA is produced through a process of polymerization, typically using free-radical polymerization.

This material is prized for its exceptional clarity, which is superior to that of many other plastics and even glass itself in some applications. It is also significantly lighter than glass and more resistant to breakage, making it a safer alternative in many scenarios. PMMA exhibits good resistance to UV radiation, meaning it does not yellow or degrade significantly when exposed to sunlight over time, a property that makes it suitable for outdoor use.

PMMA can be easily molded, machined, and fabricated, allowing for a wide range of shapes and applications. It is commonly used in the production of windows, display screens, lenses, decorative items, signage, and as a protective covering for electronic devices. Its optical properties also lend themselves to applications in lighting fixtures and light guides. While generally rigid, PMMA can be softened and reshaped with heat.
