Polümeerkõvadus is a term used to describe the resistance of a polymer material to permanent indentation or scratching. It is a critical property that influences the durability, wear resistance, and overall performance of polymeric products. Different methods exist to measure polymer hardness, each probing a slightly different aspect of the material's response to stress.

Commonly employed techniques include Shore hardness, Rockwell hardness, and Vickers hardness. Shore hardness, often measured using a durometer with a pointed or rounded indenter, is widely used for softer polymers and elastomers. Rockwell hardness is suitable for a broader range of polymers, employing different indenter shapes and loads. Vickers hardness, which uses a diamond pyramid indenter, is generally used for harder polymers and provides a measure of the material's resistance to plastic deformation.

The hardness of a polymer is influenced by several factors, including its molecular structure, degree of crosslinking, presence of fillers, and temperature. Higher crosslinking density generally leads to increased hardness. Similarly, incorporating rigid filler particles can significantly enhance the hardness and stiffness of a polymer composite. Temperature plays a crucial role; as temperature increases, polymers tend to soften, leading to a decrease in hardness. Understanding and controlling polymer hardness is essential for selecting appropriate materials for specific applications, ranging from automotive components and sporting goods to coatings and adhesives.
