Polükarbonaatidel is a group of thermoplastic polymers known for their exceptional strength, transparency, and heat resistance. These materials are characterized by the presence of carbonate groups within their molecular structure. The most common type of polycarbonates is bisphenol A polycarbonate, which is widely used due to its balance of properties and cost-effectiveness. Polycarbonates are produced through a process involving bisphenol A and phosgene, or through a transesterification process. Their remarkable impact resistance, often exceeding that of glass, makes them suitable for applications where durability is crucial. They also offer good optical clarity, allowing light to pass through with minimal distortion, similar to glass. Furthermore, polycarbonates possess a relatively high glass transition temperature, allowing them to maintain their structural integrity at elevated temperatures. These properties make polycarbonates versatile materials employed in a diverse range of industries. They are found in eyewear lenses, safety goggles, automotive components such as headlights, electronic device casings, medical equipment, and even in construction for roofing and glazing applications. While strong, polycarbonates can be susceptible to scratching, leading to the development of scratch-resistant coatings. They are also generally resistant to many chemicals, though prolonged exposure to certain solvents can cause degradation.
