Polysulfates

Polysulfates are a broad class of chemical compounds comprising repeating sulfate groups linked through oxygen or carbon scaffolds. They can be organic polymers containing sulfonate ester groups along the chain (mainly -OSO3− units with counterions) or inorganic-type networks in which sulfur–oxygen units form a polymeric backbone. In organic polysulfates, the repeating unit can be viewed as a sulfonate ester or a sulfated polyether or polyol; the exact structure determines whether the material bears pendant sulfonate groups or contains them in the main chain. The key feature is a high density of negatively charged sulfate groups, giving strong ionic character and hydrophilicity.

Preparation methods include sulfation or sulfonylation of preformed polymers using agents such as sulfur trioxide, chlorosulfuric acid, or chlorosulfonates; alternatively, diols or polyols can be polycondensed with sulfonyl chlorides to form sulfonate ester linkages. Polymerization of vinyl sulfate monomers yields poly(vinyl sulfate) derivatives; other routes involve functionalizing polysaccharides or polyethers.

Properties vary with composition but commonly include high polarity, water solubility (in many salts), chemical and thermal sensitivity of the sulfate linkages, and potential for ionic conduction in solid-state or gel electrolytes. Applications are primarily in research and industry as polyelectrolytes, flocculants for water treatment, hydrogels, and components in batteries, capacitors, or sensors. Some polysulfates serve as flame-retardant additives or as drug delivery matrices, depending on substituents and physical form.
