Functionalizing is the process of introducing one or more functional groups or reactive sites into a molecule or material in order to alter its chemical, physical, or biological properties. The term covers a range of modifications, from adding a specific group to a small molecule to attaching functionalities to a solid surface or polymer. Functionalization can be covalent, in which new bonds are formed to attach the groups, or non-covalent, relying on interactions such as hydrogen bonding, electrostatics, or π–stacking.

In practice, functionalization is applied to both molecular substrates and materials. On molecular substrates, chemists perform reactions that replace a leaving group with a desired functional fragment, or install new groups via transformations such as amination, sulfonation, or C–H functionalization. On surfaces and materials, functionalization often aims to tailor interfacial properties, improve compatibility, or enable further conjugation. Common approaches include silanization of oxide surfaces, oxidation or grafting on carbon-based supports, and click-chemistry–based grafting onto polymers or nanoparticles.

Applications span catalysis, materials science, biology, and nanotechnology. Functionalized surfaces can improve adhesion, biocompatibility, or specificity for sensing and drug delivery. Functionalized nanoparticles enable targeted delivery, imaging, or catalysis, while functionalized polymers can introduce stimuli-responsive behavior or enable coupling to other molecules. Challenges include achieving selective and uniform modification, preserving intrinsic properties, and ensuring stability under intended conditions. Characterization typically relies on spectroscopic and microscopic techniques such as FTIR, NMR, XPS, Raman spectroscopy, and surface-sensitive analyses.
