Polyoksider

Polyoksider is a class of synthetic polymers that integrate oxide-based linkages into their molecular backbone, forming hybrid inorganic–organic networks. The name combines "poly-" with "oksider," reflecting the central role of oxide bonds in the material’s structure. These materials are studied for their potential to blend the robustness of oxides with the processability of conventional polymers.

Structural motifs in polyoksider include repeating units where metal-oxygen or silicon-oxygen bonds connect organic spacers. This arrangement yields high thermal and chemical stability and allows tuning of mechanical properties and dielectric behavior. Depending on composition and processing, polyoksider can range from predominantly inorganic oxide networks to hybrids with flexible organic segments.

Synthesis methods typically involve condensation or sol–gel–type routes from metal alkoxides, silsesquioxanes, or oxide-containing monomers, often catalyzed by acid or base catalysts. Controlled hydrolysis, condensation, and aging steps enable formation of extended networks with defined crosslink density. Additives such as organic ligands or nanofillers are used to modify properties.

Applications under exploration include protective coatings with enhanced hardness and abrasion resistance, gas- or water-permeable membranes, dielectric layers for electronics, and solid-state electrolytes for energy storage. Processing challenges, such as moisture sensitivity and brittle behavior at high oxide content, are active areas of research.

While polyoksider remains largely in the research and development stage, steady progress in synthesis control and material compatibility is driving interest from materials science, chemical engineering, and electronics communities. Further study is needed to assess long-term performance and environmental impact.
