Polymerresin

Polymerresin is a broad term for resinous materials that form a polymer network upon curing. These materials are derived from polymerizable monomers and are used in a range of applications including coatings, adhesives, moldings, encapsulation, and additive manufacturing. Polymerresins can be thermosetting, where a crosslinked network forms during curing, or thermoplastic, where the material remains melt-processed but may later crosslink in some formulations. Curing mechanisms commonly involve chemical initiation, heat, or light.

Chemistries commonly encountered in polymerresins include epoxy, acrylic and methacrylate, polyurethane, polyester, and various vinyl ester systems. Many resins cure through free-radical or step-growth polymerization, often using initiators or catalysts, and may rely on crosslink density to achieve their final properties. Photoinitiated UV-curing resins are widely used in coatings and in additive manufacturing, especially stereolithography (SLA) and digital light processing (DLP).

Safety and environmental considerations include handling hazards from volatile components and curing agents, emissions during processing, and waste management challenges for thermosetting resins. Recyclability is often limited for cured materials.
