Polymer degradation refers to the chemical and physical changes that occur in a polymer material when it is exposed to various environmental factors. These changes can lead to a loss of desirable properties, such as strength, flexibility, and appearance, ultimately limiting the service life of the polymer.

Several mechanisms contribute to polymer degradation. Thermal degradation occurs when a polymer is exposed to elevated temperatures, leading to the breaking of chemical bonds within the polymer chains. This can result in chain scission, cross-linking, or the formation of volatile byproducts. Photodegradation, or photo-oxidation, is initiated by exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation, often from sunlight. UV light can break polymer bonds, creating reactive free radicals that then react with oxygen, accelerating the degradation process. Oxidative degradation is the reaction of polymers with oxygen, which can occur at room temperature or at elevated temperatures. This process also involves free radical mechanisms and can lead to chain scission or cross-linking. Hydrolytic degradation involves the reaction of polymers with water, particularly affecting polymers containing hydrolyzable groups like esters or amides. This can lead to the breaking of polymer chains. Mechanical degradation occurs due to physical stress, such as stretching, tearing, or abrasion, which can cause chain scission and create new surfaces susceptible to other degradation mechanisms.

The effects of polymer degradation can manifest in various ways, including discoloration, embrittlement, cracking, loss of gloss, and a decrease in mechanical strength. Understanding these degradation processes is crucial for selecting appropriate polymers for specific applications, designing materials with enhanced durability, and developing strategies for recycling and waste management. Additives such as antioxidants, UV stabilizers, and flame retardants are often incorporated into polymer formulations to inhibit or slow down degradation.
