Polsterabdrücke, often referred to as upholstery impressions or fabric indentations, are temporary marks left on soft furnishings like sofas, chairs, and mattresses. These marks occur when pressure is applied to the fabric for an extended period, causing the fibers to compress. Common causes include sitting in the same spot for hours, placing heavy objects on the furniture, or the natural settling of cushions.

The appearance of polsterabdrücke can vary depending on the type of fabric, the density of the padding, and the duration and intensity of the pressure. Some fabrics may show deeper or more persistent indentations than others. For instance, tightly woven fabrics or those with a plush pile might exhibit more noticeable marks.

In most cases, polsterabdrücke are harmless and will naturally disappear over time as the compressed fibers regain their original shape. Gentle agitation, such as fluffing cushions or lightly brushing the fabric, can often accelerate this process. However, very deep or long-standing indentations might require more time to fully resolve.

To minimize the occurrence of polsterabdrücke, it is advisable to periodically rotate cushions and change seating positions. For mattresses, using a mattress protector and rotating the mattress regularly can help distribute wear and prevent deep impressions. While generally not a cause for concern, significant or permanent indentations could indicate a need to address the quality of the upholstery or padding.
