Polimerikytkijät, or polymer stabilizers, are chemical additives used to protect polymers from degradation caused by environmental factors such as heat, light, oxygen, and mechanical stress. These stabilizers work by interfering with the degradation processes that lead to changes in a polymer's physical and chemical properties, such as discoloration, brittleness, and loss of strength.

There are several types of polymer stabilizers, each targeting different degradation mechanisms. Antioxidants, for example, prevent oxidation by scavenging free radicals that initiate and propagate chain reactions. UV absorbers and light stabilizers protect polymers from the damaging effects of ultraviolet radiation by absorbing or dissipating UV energy. Heat stabilizers are crucial for polymers processed at high temperatures, preventing thermal decomposition.

The choice of stabilizer depends on the specific polymer, its intended application, and the expected environmental exposure. Common polymers that benefit from stabilization include polyethylene, polypropylene, PVC, and polystyrene. Applications range from packaging and automotive parts to construction materials and textiles. Without effective stabilization, the lifespan and performance of many plastic products would be significantly reduced, leading to premature failure and waste.
