Polüestervaikude

Polüestervaikude, commonly known as polyester resins, are synthetic thermosetting polymers that are widely used in manufacturing and construction. They are formed by the reaction of a dibasic acid or its anhydride with a polyhydric alcohol, resulting in a complex, cross-linked structure upon curing. The most common types include unsaturated polyester resins (UPRs), which are characterized by the presence of carbon-carbon double bonds in their molecular chains, and saturated polyester resins, which lack these double bonds.

Unsaturated polyester resins are typically supplied as viscous liquids mixed with a reactive diluent, usually styrene, which helps to reduce viscosity and participates in the curing process. Curing is achieved through a free-radical polymerization reaction, often initiated by organic peroxides. This process transforms the liquid resin into a rigid, solid material. Polyester resins are valued for their good mechanical properties, such as strength and stiffness, as well as their resistance to water and many chemicals. They are also relatively inexpensive and easy to process.

Applications for polyester resins are diverse. They are extensively used in the production of fiberglass reinforced plastics (FRP), commonly seen in boat hulls, automotive parts, building panels, and pipes. They also find use in coatings, adhesives, casting, and as a binder in various composite materials. The specific properties of the final product can be tailored by selecting different types of resins, fillers, and reinforcing agents.
