Poistoilmalähtöisten refers to systems or processes where exhaust air plays a significant role in initiating or sustaining an operation. This concept is primarily found in the context of ventilation and building technology, specifically concerning heat recovery and air exchange. In essence, it describes a mechanism that utilizes the outgoing warm air from a building to pre-heat or pre-cool the incoming fresh air, thereby reducing the energy demand for heating or cooling.

The core principle behind poistoilmalähtöisten systems is the transfer of thermal energy. As the stale, warm indoor air is extracted from a building, it passes through a heat exchanger. Simultaneously, fresh, cold outdoor air is drawn in. The heat exchanger allows the thermal energy from the exhaust air to be transferred to the incoming fresh air without the two air streams mixing. This pre-heating of the incoming air significantly reduces the load on the building's primary heating system, especially during colder months. Conversely, in warmer months, the same principle can be applied for pre-cooling.

These systems are often integrated into mechanical ventilation units, commonly referred to as heat recovery ventilation (HRV) or energy recovery ventilation (ERV) systems.
