Plongeait

Plongeait is the imperfect tense, third-person singular form of the French verb plonger. It denotes an ongoing or habitual action in the past and is commonly used to narrate scenes, describe repeated activities, or set background in a text.

Intransitively, plongeait describes someone diving into water: “Il plongeait dans la mer.” In transitive uses, it can express immersion of an object: “plonger un pinceau dans l’encre,” or figuratively, “plonger son regard dans le vide” or “plonger dans ses souvenirs.” The imparfait foregrounds the duration or repetition of the action rather than a completed moment.
